Welding Machines

Arc (stick), TIG and multi-process welders for the home shed, farm and workshop, priced $284 to $1,740. Most machines here run stick rods, lift TIG and MIG wire from one unit, and several run on a normal 10A plug. There is a plasma cutter too. For wire-feed machines see MIG welders, and stock up on MIG wire. Not sure which type you need? Read our welding for beginners guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best welding machine for a beginner?
A small MIG. The MIG120 at $298 runs gasless wire, plugs into a normal 10A socket and welds up to about 4mm steel, which covers gates, trailers and shed repairs. If you would rather learn stick, the Mini ARC140 at $284 is the cheapest way in. The ready to weld combos add the helmet, wire and gloves so you can start the day it arrives.
Is welding hard to learn?
MIG is the easiest. Pull the trigger, hold the angle, keep the speed steady, and you will lay a usable bead within an hour. Stick takes a weekend to stop sticking the rod. TIG takes months. Our welding for beginners guide covers settings, safety and the first jobs to practise on.
What are the main types of welding?
MIG uses a wire feed and is fast and easy. Gasless MIG uses flux cored wire and needs no bottle. Stick, also called arc or MMA, uses a coated rod and works outdoors on rusty steel. TIG uses a tungsten torch and filler rod for clean, precise welds on thin or stainless steel. Multi-process machines like the MIG160D and MIG225 do all three from one box.
Is TIG or MIG better?
MIG for speed, thick steel and anyone learning. TIG for thin material, stainless, and welds that need to look perfect. Most home and farm workshops only ever need MIG. If you want both, a multi-process machine gives you lift TIG without buying a second welder.
Can I run a welder off a normal house plug?
The MIG120, MIG160, ARC140 and MMA160 all run on a standard 10A plug. The 200A and 225A machines pull more current at full output and want a 15A outlet, which an electrician can add to a garage for a modest cost. Each product page states the plug type.
What is the difference between the MIG160 and the MIG160D?
The MIG160 is a MIG only machine at $484. The MIG160D at $889 is multi-process, so it also does stick welding and lift TIG, and it has a digital display for dialling in settings. Buy the plain MIG160 if you will only ever run wire. Buy the D if you want stick for outdoor repairs or TIG later.
