Frequently Asked Questions

Which contact tip do I need?
Match the tip bore to your wire: 0.6, 0.8, 0.9 or 1.0mm, and the thread to your torch, M6 for MB15 and M6 or M8 for MB24, MB25 and MB36. Packs of 10 are $14. Change the tip when the arc gets erratic or the hole has worn oval.
How do I know what MIG torch I have?
Look for the model on the handle or neck, usually MB15, MB24, MB25 or MB36. Most welders sold in New Zealand under 200 amps run an MB15, and 200 to 250 amp machines an MB24 or MB25. If there is no marking, measure the nozzle and compare with the dimensions on each Weldco product page.
Conical or cylindrical nozzle?
Conical for most work, it gives better access into corners and a focused gas shield. Cylindrical for wide fillet welds and when you want more gas coverage on a windy day. Both are $14 a pair here and fit the same tip adaptor.
What size electrode for stick welding?
2.6mm for steel 3 to 6mm thick on a 140 to 160 amp machine, which is most home and farm jobs. 3.2mm for 6mm and up on a bigger welder. 1.6mm for thin sheet. Weldco general purpose electrodes come in 1kg packs from $25 and weld in any position.
How long does a spool of MIG wire last?
A 0.7kg spool is an afternoon of repairs. A 4.5kg spool of gasless wire covers a trailer build or a few weekends. A 15kg spool at $134 is the economical buy for a workshop that welds weekly, but check your machine takes a 300mm spool before ordering.
Why does my MIG keep burning back to the tip?
Usually a worn tip, wire speed too low for the amps, or the tip set too far out of the nozzle. Fit a fresh tip, bump the wire speed and check the liner is not kinked. Keep a 10 pack on hand so a tip change does not stop the job.
