Petrol Generators NZ

Petrol generators for site power, farms and home backup, from 2.4kVA to 11.8kVA and $1,653 to $3,421. Petrol is sold everywhere, so refuelling on a job site or a remote property is never a problem. The open-frame models run from 4.4kVA up for bigger loads. Need something smaller for camping? See portable generators, or browse all generators.

Frequently Asked Questions

Petrol or diesel generator?
Petrol generators cost less to buy, weigh less and run quieter, which suits home backup, camping and site work that is a few hours at a time. Diesel suits daily long runs and bigger loads and costs more upfront. Petrol is sold at every service station in the country, which matters on a remote job.
How much fuel does a petrol generator use?
As a rule of thumb a 5kVA inverter generator burns about 1 to 1.5 litres an hour at half load. Inverter throttling cuts that a lot when the load is light. Each product page lists the tank size and run time at rated load.
Does petrol go stale in a generator?
Yes. Petrol starts to degrade after 30 to 60 days and gums up carburettors. If the generator will sit for more than a month, run the carburettor dry or add a fuel stabiliser, and start it for 15 minutes once a month under a small load.
What oil does a petrol generator take?
Most take a four-stroke 10W-30 or 10W-40. Change it after the first 20 hours of running, then every 50 to 100 hours or once a season. The manual for each model gives the exact grade and quantity.
Is a petrol generator good enough for home backup?
For outages that last hours or a few days, yes. Pair it with a changeover switch fitted by a registered electrician, keep 20 litres of fresh fuel in a proper container, and run it monthly so it starts when you need it.
