Generators for Sale NZ

Generators for sale across New Zealand, from a 2.4kVA portable you can carry to an 11.8kVA open-frame petrol generator for the whole site, priced $1,653 to $3,421. Every model runs on petrol and makes pure sine wave power, so it is safe for tools, fridges and laptops. After a 5kVA generator? The 4.4kVA and 6.8kVA models sit either side. Not sure what size you need? Try our generator sizing calculator, or compare inverter generators.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size generator do I need to run a house in NZ?
For the essentials in a power cut, fridge and freezer, lights, Wi-Fi and phone charging, a 3 to 4kVA generator is enough. Add the jug, microwave or a heat pump and you want 5 to 7kVA. Running the whole house through a changeover switch needs 9kVA or more. Size for starting watts, not running watts. Fridges, pumps and compressors draw two to three times their running power for the first second. Our range runs from 2.4kVA to 11.8kVA.
What will a 10,000 watt generator run in a house?
Just about everything a normal NZ house uses at once: fridge, freezer, lights, Wi-Fi, TV, jug, microwave, washing machine and a heat pump, as long as the oven and a spa are not running too. Our 9.4kVA and 11.8kVA open frame units sit in this bracket. Wire them in through a changeover switch so the whole switchboard is covered.
What is the 80% rule for generators?
Run a generator at no more than 80% of its rated output for continuous use. A 5kVA generator is happiest carrying around 4kVA all day. That headroom covers start-up surges and keeps the engine and alternator cooler, which is what makes a generator last.
How long can a generator run continuously?
It comes down to tank size and load. The inverter generators here run roughly 4 to 10 hours on a tank at half load, and inverter throttling stretches that at light loads. Let it cool before refuelling, check the oil every tank, and give it a rest every 24 hours of running.
Can I connect a generator to my house?
Yes, through a changeover switch fitted by a registered electrician. Never backfeed through a wall plug. It is illegal in New Zealand, it can electrocute a lines worker, and it will damage the generator when the mains come back on.
Inverter generator or conventional generator?
An inverter generator makes clean pure sine wave power that is safe for laptops, TVs, modern fridges and battery chargers, and it runs quieter and uses less fuel because the engine throttles to match the load. A conventional generator is cheaper per kVA and fine for site tools and lights. Everything in this range is inverter type. See the inverter generators.
Do you deliver generators NZ-wide?
Yes, to every address in New Zealand. Generators ship by freight on a pallet, so allow a few working days and a kerbside drop. Orders over $200 are free to most urban addresses, and heavy or rural deliveries may carry a freight charge that shows at checkout.
