Allen Keys & Hex Keys NZ

Allen keys and hex keys in metric and imperial, from a $7 T-handle key to a 31-piece plier, hex key and wrench tray at $376. Ball end keys reach bolts at an angle, T-handles give you leverage on stubborn grub screws, and the jumbo long sets cover the big fasteners on machinery. Need the socket version for a ratchet? See hex bit sockets, or complete the kit with spanner sets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Allen keys the same as hex keys?
Yes. Allen is a brand name that stuck, the way Skilsaw did. Hex key is the generic term. Both describe the L shaped or T handled tool with a six sided tip that fits socket head cap screws and grub screws.
What makes a good quality Allen key set?
Chrome vanadium or S2 steel, sizes stamped on each key, a holder that keeps them in order, and a long arm with a ball end for angled access. Cheap keys round off inside the screw and then you have two problems. The Powerbuilt sets here are the long life option, the Trades Pro sets the budget one.
Ball end or standard hex keys?
Ball end lets you drive a screw at up to 25 degrees off square, which is a lifesaver inside machinery and bike frames. Use the plain short end to crack a tight screw loose, because the ball end can snap under heavy torque. Most sets here give you both ends on one key.
What size Allen key do I need for a grub screw?
The common pairs are M3 screw to 1.5mm key, M4 to 2mm, M5 to 2.5mm, M6 to 3mm, M8 to 4mm, M10 to 5mm and M12 to 6mm. If a key feels loose, try the next size up or check whether the screw is imperial.
Metric or imperial hex keys?
Metric for anything made in the last few decades, bikes, furniture, machinery and Japanese or European vehicles. Imperial for American gear, Harleys, older machinery and a lot of farm equipment. A combination set covers both for around $16 to $93.
What can I use instead of an Allen key?
For a one off, a Torx bit one size up will often bite enough to turn the screw, and a flat blade can work on larger sizes. Neither is kind to the screw head. A 9 piece ball end set is $16 here, which is cheaper than drilling out a rounded cap screw.
