Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a good quality spanner set?
Drop forged chrome vanadium steel, an offset ring end with a 12 point profile, sizes stamped deep enough to read when greasy, and a warranty the brand honours. Powerbuilt and Trades Pro sets here tick all four.
Which spanner sizes do I use most?
8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 17 and 19mm cover most car, ute and farm work. An 8 to 24mm set is the common starter and handles nearly everything up to suspension bolts. Add 27, 30 and 32mm for axle nuts and machinery.
Are ratchet spanners worth it?
Yes, for tight spots where a socket will not fit and you cannot swing a plain spanner more than a few degrees. Keep a plain combination set for cracking tight fasteners loose, then switch to the ratchet spanner to run them off.
Metric or imperial spanner set?
Metric for modern vehicles and machinery. Imperial, also called AF, for older Ford and Holden, American gear, Harleys and a lot of older farm equipment. A combined metric and imperial set is the safe buy for a workshop that sees everything.
Ring and open end or combination spanners?
A combination spanner has a ring on one end and an open end on the other in the same size, which is what most people mean by a spanner set. Double ring sets give you two sizes per spanner and grip better. Open end only is for plumbing and fittings where a ring cannot get on.
