Diesel or electric heater for a workshop?
Diesel for a big or draughty space. A 16kW to 51kW diesel heater warms a workshop bay or a site shed in minutes and runs off a normal plug for the fan. Electric industrial fan heaters top out around 15kW on three phase and are slow in an uninsulated shed. The diesel heaters here start at $789.
How big a heater do I need?
Allow about 100 watts per square metre for an uninsulated workshop with a 3 metre stud, so 16kW heats around 150 square metres, 21kW around 200, 37kW around 350 and 51kW around 500. Halve those figures if the doors are open all day.
Radiant or fan forced heat?
Radiant heaters warm what is in front of them without moving air, so they suit spray areas, dusty work and anyone standing at a bench. Fan forced direct fire heaters push hot air through a large space quickly and suit sheds, barns and site huts. Both need ventilation.
Can I use a diesel heater indoors?
In a workshop with an open door or vent, yes. Direct fire heaters release exhaust gases into the space, so they are not for houses, offices or anywhere people sleep. Keep two metres clear in front and never run one near fuel or solvents.
What size workshop fan do I need?
A 50cm fan at $124 moves air around a double garage. A 76cm floor, wall or pedestal fan at $400 handles a workshop bay or a shed. The 106cm belt drive barrel fan at $945 shifts enough air to cool a large factory floor or dry out a flooded space.
