MIG Welders NZ

MIG welders from 120A to 225A, priced $298 to $1,740. Gasless MIG welders need no gas bottle and suit the shed, farm and outdoor jobs, and gas-ready machines give a cleaner weld on thin steel. Ready-to-weld packages add the helmet, wire and gloves. Pick up MIG wire while you are here, or see all welders. New to it? Our guide to gasless MIG, arc and TIG welding explains which machine suits your job.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best home MIG welder?
For most home workshops it is the MIG160 at $484. It runs gas or gasless wire, works off a 10A plug, and welds steel up to about 6mm, which covers trailers, gates, racks and car repairs. Step up to the MIG200 or MIG225 for 8 to 10mm plate or all day use. The MIG120 at $298 is the budget pick for light sheet and the odd repair.
Gas or gasless MIG welder?
Every MIG here runs both. Gasless flux cored wire needs no bottle and works outdoors in wind, with more spatter to clean. Gas with solid wire gives cleaner welds indoors on clean steel. Start gasless, add a bottle later if you want prettier welds.
What thickness can a 160 amp MIG weld?
About 6mm steel in a single pass, and thicker with multiple passes and a bevel. A 200 amp machine handles 8mm and a 225 amp machine 10mm in one pass. For thin sheet under 1mm, turn the amps down and use 0.6mm wire.
Do I need a gas bottle to MIG weld?
Not with gasless flux cored wire, which is why most people start that way. For gas MIG you rent or buy an argon and CO2 mix bottle from a gas supplier like BOC or Supagas and add a regulator. The welder packages here include the regulator.
What comes in a ready to weld package?
The machine, an auto darkening helmet, welding gloves, a spool of wire and the regulator for gas, so you have nothing else to buy before the first weld. Package B versions add a bigger helmet and more consumables. The package price is lower than buying the parts separately.
Is MIG or TIG better?
MIG for speed, thicker steel and learning. TIG for thin, stainless or aluminium work where the weld has to look perfect. The MIG160D, MIG200DS and MIG225 do lift TIG as well as MIG and stick, so you can try TIG without buying another machine.
