Your questions answered

FAQs

What can the MIG160D weld?
MIG on mild steel up to 6mm, stick welding with 1.6mm to 3.2mm rods, and true lift DC TIG on mild and stainless steel with the optional WP17 torch and regulator. The D stands for the digital display and synergic setup, which the plain MIG160 does not have.
MIG160 or MIG160D, which one?
The MIG160 is MIG only with manual settings at $484. The MIG160D adds a digital display, synergic setup that picks the settings for you, stick welding and lift TIG. If you only ever run wire, save the money. If you want stick for outdoor repairs or TIG later, buy the D.
What thickness of steel will it handle?
Up to 6mm mild steel in a single MIG pass. In stick mode it runs 1.6mm to 3.2mm electrodes.
What plug does it run on?
A standard 10 amp household plug, so it runs off any garage or shed socket. Keep extension leads short and heavy gauge.
Gas or gasless?
Both. Gasless flux cored wire needs no bottle and works outdoors in a breeze, with more spatter to clean off. Solid wire with an argon and CO2 mix gives cleaner welds indoors. Most people start gasless and add a bottle later. See our MIG wire range. The synergic program covers 0.6mm to 1.0mm wire for both.
What is in the box?
The MIG160D power source, an MB15 MIG torch with 3 metre lead, twist lock electrode holder and 3 metre lead, 200 amp earth clamp and 3 metre lead, gas hose, carry strap and manual. Helmet, gloves and wire are separate, or buy a MIG160 package.
Is it any good for a beginner?
Yes. Synergic setup means you pick the wire size and material thickness and the machine sets voltage and wire speed. Pull the trigger, hold the angle, keep the speed steady. Our welding for beginners guide walks through the first jobs.
What warranty does it have?
12 months through the New Zealand importer. Keep the receipt as proof of purchase.
