What size compressor do I need for air tools?
Match the compressor to the tool that uses the most air. A nailer, blow gun or tyre inflator runs happily off a 24 litre unit. An impact wrench or die grinder wants 40 to 50 litres with a 2 to 3 horsepower motor. Sanders, grinders and spray guns run continuously and need 100 litres or a belt drive. Oil free or belt drive compressor?
Oil free direct drive compressors are cheaper, lighter and need no servicing, which suits a home garage or occasional site use. Belt drive compressors run quieter and cooler, last longer under daily use, and deliver more air. The 100 litre belt drive at $1,342 is the workshop choice.
Can I run air tools off a small compressor?
Yes for short bursts. A 24 litre compressor will rattle off wheel nuts with an impact wrench, it just has to catch up between nuts. What it will not do is run a sander or grinder continuously. Check the tool's air consumption in litres per minute against the compressor's free air delivery.
Nitto or ARO fittings?
Nitto is the common standard in New Zealand, and most tools sold here come with a Nitto plug. ARO is the American pattern. They do not mix, so fit one style across your compressor, hoses and tools. The air hoses and fittings page has both in 1/4 inch BSP.
What air hose should I buy?
A 9.5mm hybrid polymer hose for anything beyond a blow gun. It stays flexible in winter, does not kink and feeds enough air to an impact wrench. 10 metres at $87 suits a garage, 20 metres at $145 a workshop or site. Recoil hoses are handy for tyres and blowing down the bench.
