Wrenches & Spanners

Wrenches and spanners in metric and imperial, from $6 singles to $854 sets: ring and open-end, flare nut, adjustable and raised panel spanners up to 65mm for truck wheel nuts and plant. Each size is sold on its own, so you only buy the one you are missing. Kit out a van with spanner sets, get into tight spots with ratchet spanners, and cover grub screws and machine bolts with allen keys and hex keys.

Frequently Asked Questions

What spanner set should I buy first?
A metric ring and open end set from 8mm to 19mm. That covers cars, bikes, machinery and most household fittings. Add 22 and 24mm later for suspension and trailer work. See the spanner sets for sets from 7 to 25 pieces.
Ring and open end, ratchet or flare nut spanners?
Ring and open end is the everyday spanner. A ratchet spanner speeds things up where you cannot swing a full turn. A flare nut spanner grips brake and fuel line fittings on five sides instead of two so the soft nut does not round. Own the first, add the other two as the jobs come up.
Can I buy single spanners?
Yes. Powerbuilt mirror polished ring and open end spanners are sold individually from $6, metric and imperial, so you can replace the 10mm that walked off or add a 27mm for one job.
Metric or imperial spanners?
Metric for almost everything in New Zealand. Imperial for American vehicles, Harleys, older tractors and some farm and marine gear. A few imperial sizes cross over closely enough, 1/2 inch to 13mm for instance, but a loose fit rounds nuts, so buy the right set.
What is an adjustable wrench good for?
Plumbing fittings, odd sizes and anything you meet once. It is a backup, not a replacement for a spanner set, because the jaw moves under load and chews the nut. Keep a 250mm one in the kit and reach for it last.
