Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between impact sockets and normal sockets?
Impact sockets are made from chrome molybdenum steel, which flexes slightly under the hammering of an impact wrench instead of cracking. They have thicker walls, a black oxide finish and a pin hole to lock onto the anvil. Normal chrome vanadium sockets are harder and shatter in a rattle gun.
Can I use impact sockets with a hand ratchet?
Yes, with no downside beyond the thicker wall, which can be a problem in a tight recess. Many mechanics run impact sockets on everything for that reason. You just cannot do it the other way round.
Which impact sockets do I need for wheel nuts?
17, 19 and 21mm cover nearly every car and ute in New Zealand, with 22mm for some European and American vehicles. Use a deep impact socket so it clears the stud, and a thin wall or protective sleeve on alloy wheels. The 3 piece deep wheel nut set at $93 covers the common sizes.
3/4 inch or 1/2 inch drive impact sockets?
1/2 inch for cars, utes, vans and light machinery, up to about 32mm. 3/4 inch for trucks, tractors, trailers and heavy plant, where the nuts are 30mm and up and the impact wrench is a big one. The 3/4 inch sockets here run from 23mm to 50mm.
Why do impact sockets have a hole in the side?
For the retaining pin and O ring that lock the socket onto the impact wrench anvil so it cannot fly off. On a 1/2 inch gun with a friction ring you can ignore the hole. On 3/4 and 1 inch tools you should use the pin.
Are your impact sockets metric or imperial?
Both. Metric covers 10mm to 50mm across 1/2 and 3/4 inch drive. Imperial sets in 1/2 inch drive are there for American vehicles and older machinery. Sets and singles are listed, singles from $8, so you can build what you need.
