Welding Helmets & Safety Gear

Auto darkening welding helmets from $90 to $290, plus fixed shade flip front helmets from $31 for the odd MIG or arc job. Two sensor helmets suit the home workshop. Four sensor helmets with a 1/1/1/1 lens and a bigger viewing area are the pick for daily fabrication or out of position work. Spare filter covers, magnifying lenses, head and neck protectors and welding gloves are here too. New to it? Read the beginner's welding guide, then match a helmet to your welder.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 1/1/1/1 mean on a welding helmet?
It is the lens rated in four classes from 1 to 3: optical clarity, light diffusion, shade consistency across the lens, and shade consistency when you look through it at an angle. 1 is best in each. A 1/1/1/1 lens shows the weld pool clearly from edge to edge. A 1/1/1/2 lens goes slightly darker when you look through it on an angle, which is fine for flat work.
Fixed shade or auto darkening?
Fixed shade 10 does the job if you always weld the same material at the same amps and do not mind nodding the helmet down. Auto darkening lets you line up with the helmet down and switches in 0.05 milliseconds, which matters once you weld more than the odd job or work in awkward positions.
How much does a good welding helmet cost in NZ?
Around $90 to $165 buys a two or four sensor auto darkening helmet that will handle daily MIG and arc work. $220 to $290 gets a large view lens with memory settings and a lift front. Under $50 buys a fixed shade flip front for occasional use.
Do auto darkening helmets need batteries?
Most run on a solar cell with a battery backup, so they charge off the arc and stay ready between jobs. Leave the helmet in daylight occasionally and the battery lasts for years.
Do you stock air fed welding helmets?
Not at the moment. The range covers passive flip front and auto darkening helmets. Call 0800 422 054 if you need a powered air helmet and we will point you in the right direction.
