Frequently Asked Questions

What are the two types of Torx sockets?
Male Torx bit sockets, sized T8 to T70, drive the star shaped recess in a screw head. Female E Torx sockets, sized E4 to E24, fit over external star shaped bolt heads, common on European and late model Japanese cars. The 35 piece Powerbuilt set at $166 covers both in three drive sizes.
What are female E Torx sockets used for?
Bolts with an external star head, found on seat belts, engine mounts, cylinder heads, bell housings and seat rails in Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Ford and newer Toyota and Mazda models. A normal socket will not grip them. The 10 piece female set at $60 covers E4 to E18.
Can I use a hex or Allen key on a Torx bolt?
You can jam one in, and you will probably round the head. Torx was designed to carry more torque than hex, and the fit is tighter. Buy the right bit, they start at $7 here, and keep a spare of the sizes you use most.
What is a tamper proof Torx bit?
A Torx bit with a hole drilled in the tip to clear the pin in the middle of a security screw. You find them on appliances, vehicle trim, electronics and public fittings. A tamper proof bit also fits a normal Torx screw, so the 9 piece tamper proof key set at $53 covers both.
Which Torx sizes do I need for cars?
T20, T25, T27, T30, T40, T45, T50 and T55 for interior trim, brake calipers, seat belts and drive shafts. E10, E12, E14 and E18 for external bolts. An 11 piece bit socket set at $41 covers the common male sizes, and impact rated long bits suit a rattle gun on brake caliper bolts.
Are Torx sockets impact rated?
Only the ones labelled impact, like the 1/2 inch long series impact bits. Chrome vanadium bit sockets will crack in a rattle gun. For caliper bolts and seat belt bolts use the impact bits, or break the bolt loose by hand and spin it out with a normal socket.
