Frequently Asked Questions

Which socket drive size do I need?
1/4 inch for small fasteners, trim and electronics, up to about 13mm. 3/8 inch is the all rounder for engine work, brakes and machinery up to 19mm. 1/2 inch for wheel nuts, suspension and anything that needs a long breaker bar. Most home workshops do fine with a 1/4 and 1/2 inch set.
6 point or 12 point sockets?
6 point for anything tight, rusty or important, because it grips the flats of the nut and will not round it. 12 point gets onto a nut faster in a blind spot and fits 12 point bolt heads. Most sets here are 6 point, with 12 point available where the job calls for it.
Can I buy a single socket to replace a lost one?
Yes. Powerbuilt standard, deep and impact sockets are sold individually from $4 in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 inch drive. Search the size and drive you need or browse the deep sockets and impact sockets.
What is a breaker bar for?
Cracking loose a tight nut without wrecking your ratchet. A long handle with no ratchet mechanism gives you leverage and nothing to break. Use the breaker bar to free the nut, then swap to the ratchet to spin it off.
What socket accessories are worth having?
Extension bars in 75mm and 150mm, a universal joint for angled access, a spark plug socket in 16 and 21mm, and a set of adaptors to run 3/8 sockets on a 1/2 inch ratchet. A good socket set includes most of them.
What are Torx and hex sockets for?
Torx bit sockets drive star head screws on vehicles and appliances. Hex bit sockets drive socket head cap screws on machinery and bikes with a ratchet instead of an Allen key, so you can apply real torque. Both are in the Torx sockets range.
