What is the best screwdriver set to buy?
For a workshop or a tradie, a 10 piece go through set like the Powerbuilt WSS5012 at $161. The steel shaft runs right through the handle so you can hit it with a hammer to free a seized screw. For the kitchen drawer, the Trades Pro 12 piece at $15 or the Tool House 6 piece at $12 does the job.
Phillips or Pozidriv, and does it matter?
It matters. Pozidriv screws have a second set of fine lines between the cross. A Phillips driver fits them loosely and cams out, chewing the head. Most construction and furniture screws in NZ are Pozi, so a PZ2 is the driver you want for building work.
What is a Robertson screwdriver?
A square drive. Common on NZ decking and roofing screws, trailers and older Canadian and American gear. The number 2 Robertson is the one most people need, and it holds the screw on the tip without a magnet, which is handy up a ladder.
What is a go through screwdriver?
One where the hardened steel shaft passes through the whole handle to a steel cap on the end. You can strike it with a hammer to shock a rusted screw loose, or use the hex bolster with a spanner for extra torque. Normal screwdrivers split their handle if you do that.
Do you sell JIS screwdrivers?
Not at the moment. JIS screws, found on Japanese motorbikes and older cars, have a cross without the pointed centre. A number 2 Phillips will drive them if you keep firm pressure on, but it can cam out on tight ones. Use a fresh tip and do not rush it.
What is a tamper proof Torx screwdriver for?
Torx screws with a pin in the centre, used on appliances, vehicle trim, electronics and anything the maker did not want opened. A tamper proof driver has a hole in the tip to clear the pin. The Powerbuilt set here covers T8 to T40, which are the sizes that turn up most.
