Trolley jack, bottle jack or axle stands, what do I actually need?
For a car or ute in a garage, a 2 to 3 tonne trolley jack plus a pair of rated axle stands. For trucks, trailers, tractors and anything with clearance, a bottle jack sized above the load. Jacks lift, stands hold. You need both before anyone goes underneath.
What tonnage jack do I need?
2 tonne for cars and small SUVs, 3 tonne for utes and 4WDs, 4 tonne and up for trucks. A jack lifts one corner or one end, not the whole vehicle, so the rating only needs to beat a third to a half of the vehicle's weight with some margin.
Can I lift a house with a hydraulic jack?
Repilers and builders use 20 to 50 tonne bottle jacks on steel plates and solid packing to relevel houses. The jack is the easy part. Get a builder to work out the load and the bearer points, lift in small steps, and pack as you go so the jack is never the only thing holding the house.
How do I look after a hydraulic jack?
Store it with the ram fully down, bottle jacks upright, out of the rain. Top up with hydraulic jack oil, not engine oil or brake fluid. If it starts to sink under load, bleed the air out and check the oil before you blame the seals. Never use it as a stand.
